The “Taste of Fall”

Awwww … Fall is in the air. I breathed in its crisp draft as I opened the front door this morning and all of a sudden a desire for homemade chili and cornbread crept in. The changing colors stir in me a hunger for the “taste of fall” where hearty foods are the main course. There is nothing like a chilly evening, fire crackling in the background and diving into a pan of Crockpot Lasagna.

Only a few weeks ago, the warmth of summer was still whispering to me as I was planning picnics and bike rides. But now I’m pulling out my sweatshirts for football season, baking pumpkin “everything,” and buying Autumn dishes because you can never have enough table settings, right?

“The Ultimate Comfort Food Experience”

I think you will “Fall” in love with this next series of recipes – “Ultimate Comfort Food Experience.” Because what’s more comforting than waking up under the warmth of a down comforter and smelling the aroma of Homemade Cinnamon Rolls in the air? Or slipping into those comfy PJ’s and enjoying a bowl of Homemade Chicken and Noodles while binging on that favorite Netflix series. This is the “warmth” that comes with the chill of Autumn.

Comfort Food – Life’s Little Pleasures

For the most part, I tend to veer away from those heavy, calorie-ridden meals. But ’tis the season to throw caution to the wind and indulge in some of life’s little pleasures.

Believe it or not, there is a scientific truth behind the idea that food provides a sense of comfort and satisfaction. Emotional associations are drawn from pleasurable experiences that have involved food. And many times they are connected to our past. These might evoke a sense of security and contentment from when you were a child. They might create a yearning to return to a time when life was simpler.

Past Memories and Emotions Tied to Food

For instance, whenever I think of popcorn, peanut M&M’s and a pan of brownies, it takes me back to Sunday evenings watching the TV series Alias with our teenage children. Chicken Fried Steak smothered in cream gravy stirs a fond memory of splurging. As a young family on a tight budget, it was a treat to go out to eat. The celebration for me was Chicken Fried Steak, every time. The aroma of grilled hamburgers in the air reminds me of crisp autumn evenings, hanging out on our deck, laughing among long-time friends and the buzz of conversations all around. These past memories around food, family, and friendship arouse a subconscious sense of delight and well-being.

For this month’s “Ultimate Comfort Food Experience,” some of the recipes I have chosen are traditional meals from my family. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have loved returning to them.
